Epilepsy is a chronic disorder or seizure disorders that affects more than 50 million people worldwide. It's a problem with brain’s electrical system. This region is comprised of such structures as the hippocampus and amygdala, which control emotion, and the uncus, which is responsible for processing smells. As a result, seizures that arise in these areas commonly produce strong emotions, such as fear, or the sensation of an acrid odor, such as burning rubber.

Seizures that begin in the temporal lobe often are not restricted to that lobe. They can propagate through the vast networks of neurons that connect the temporal and frontal lobes, producing more widespread seizure activity. Sometimes they spread widely enough to become generalized seizures, which involve the entire brain and alter consciousness. 

A person is diagnosed with epilepsy if they have one or more seizures that were not caused by some known and reversible medical condition like alcohol withdrawal or extremely low blood sugar. The seizures in epilepsy may be related to a brain injury or a family tendency, but often the cause is completely unknown. The word "epilepsy" does not indicate anything about the cause of the person's seizures or their severity. Nevertheless, epilepsy does not cause and is not a form of mental illness. Febrile Seizures
Febrile seizures are the most common type of convulsions in infants and young children (about 6 months and 5 years old).
The vast majority of febrile seizures are convulsions. Most often during a febrile seizure, a child will lose consciousness and both arms and legs will shake uncontrollably. common symptoms include eye rolling, rigid (stiff) limbs, or twitching on only one side or a portion of the body, such as an arm or a leg, severe shaking or tightening of the muscles.  Sometimes during a febrile seizure, a child may lose consciousness but will not noticeably shake or move.
Having a febrile seizure does not mean a child has epilepsy, since that disorder is characterized by reoccurring seizures that are not triggered by fever.  Even prolonged seizures (lasting more 15 minutes) generally have a good outcome but carry an increased risk of developing epilepsy. 

Febrile seizures also aren't an indication of epilepsy, a tendency to have recurrent seizures caused by abnormal electrical signals in the brain. The odds that your child will develop epilepsy after a febrile seizure are small. Only a small percentage of children who have a febrile seizure go on to develop epilepsy 

The small group of children with very prolonged febrile seizures lasting longer than 30 minutes.  In these children, the risk of epilepsy is as high as 30 to 40 percent though the condition may not occur for many years, prolonged febrile seizures can injure the hippocampus, a brain structure involved with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE)

Early febrile seizures prolonged and ineffective treatment are a precipitating event that leads to Hippocampal sclerosis. Hippocampal sclerosis develops in life during the course of recurrent complex partial seizures. If not treated, the memory will gradually worsening, because the hippocampus stores new memory, then passes it on to appropriate parts of the brain for permanent storage.  When it's not functioning properly, some new memory cannot be retained.  Which explain why many people with TLE identify memory as a problem.

Eyes are generally open. 
The person may appear to not be breathing and actually turn blue. This may be followed by a period of deep, noisy breathes.
The return to consciousness is gradual and the person may be tired and confused for quite some time -- minutes to hours.
Loss of urine is common. 

Partial or Focal seizures
These only affect one side of your brain, so only part of the body is affected. Depending on the part of the brain having abnormal electrical activity, symptoms may vary. When the seizures occur due to involvement of one area of brain, they are known as Focal Seizures.
These are of two types: Simple Partial and Complex Partial. In Simple Partial cases, the person remains conscious, has a sudden emotional experience (feeling of joy, sadness, fear, sexual arousal), has hallucinations of hearing, taste, smell or vision, and there may also be an involuntary jerking of body parts. In Complex Partial Seizure, the person’s consciousness is altered or lost. The symptoms include staring, automatism (repeated rhythmic, purposeless movements) like eye blinking, hand rubbing, walking in circle, mouth movements, smacking movement of lips, picking at bed clothes. After a few minutes, consciousness is regained and the drowsy feeling may remain.

Absence or Petit Mal Seizures
These are often described as staring spells. The person stops what he’s doing, stares into space for a few seconds, then goes on like nothing happened. Repetitive blinking or other small movements may be present. It’s most common in children and usually starts between the ages of 4 and 12. Some kids have as many as 100 to 200 absence seizures in 1 day. Typically, these seizures are brief, lasting only seconds.

Does Anti-Epileptic drugs (AEDs) effectively control seizure disorder?
For over 80 years, the most used treatment for epilepsy and seizure disorders has been through the use of seizure-preventing medications called anti-convulsion or anti-epileptic drugs. Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) aimed at modifying the structures and processes involved during the development of a seizure; including neurons, receptors, glia, ion channels and inhibitory or excitatory synapses. Inhibition is triggered to stop or prevent seizure activity. Some adverse effects of antiepileptic drugs develop insidiously and may become apparent only after months or even years of therapy. 
The risk for congenital malformations in newborns of mothers treated with antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy is about 2-6%, versus 1-2% for the general population. The risk varies in relation to the type of drug, the dose and the number of administered drugs
