EPILEPSY CURE USING HERBAL MEDICINE

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF HERBAL MEDICINE FOR SEIZURE DISORDER

Epilepsy is a chronic disorder or seizure disorders that affects more than 50 million people worldwide. It's a problem with brain’s electrical system. A surge of electrical impulses cause brief changes in movement, behavior, feeling, or awareness. the hallmark of which is recurrent, unprovoked seizures. The seizure can last from a few seconds to a few minutes. People who've had two or more seizures without obvious triggers at least 24 hours apart have epilepsy. They can strike at any age and produce a variety of behaviors — from a blank stare to a full body convulsion — depending on the brain region affected. Many people with epilepsy have more than one type of seizure and may have other symptoms of neurological problems as well. Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder and affects people of all ages. It is characterized by unpredictable seizures and can cause other health problems. Having seizures and epilepsy can affect one's safety, relationships, work, driving and so much more. In detail, Epilepsy and uncontrolled seizures can put limitations on your independence, self-esteem, and quality of life. With epilepsy, you may have trouble getting or keeping a driver's license. If you become pregnant, complications can occur. Your career choices may be limited. Some people with epilepsy face discrimination at work or school due to other people's fears and misconceptions about this condition, which is what explain why there is premature death is 11 times more common among people with epilepsy compared to the rest of the population. Suicides, accidents and assaults accounted for 15.8% of early deaths. In a nut shell, public perception and misunderstanding of epilepsy causes challenges often worse than the seizures

The human brain is the source of human epilepsy. Although the symptoms of a seizure may affect any part of the body, the electrical events that produce the symptoms occur in the brain. The location of that event, how it spreads and how much of the brain is affected, and how long it lasts all have profound effects. These factors determine the character of a seizure and its impact on the individual. Esssentially, anything the brain can do, it can do in the form of a seizure.

Seizures can occur anywhere in the brain, but in children they frequently occur in the temporal and frontal lobes, affecting the functions that these regions control. A region of particular importance in adults with epilepsy, but less so in children, is the mesial, or middle, part of the temporal lobe. This region is comprised of such structures as the hippocampus and amygdala, which control emotion, and the uncus, which is responsible for processing smells. As a result, seizures that arise in these areas commonly produce strong emotions, such as fear, or the sensation of an acrid odor, such as burning rubber.

Seizures that begin in the temporal lobe often are not restricted to that lobe. They can propagate through the vast networks of neurons that connect the temporal and frontal lobes, producing more widespread seizure activity. Sometimes they spread widely enough to become generalized seizures, which involve the entire brain and alter consciousness.

A person is diagnosed with epilepsy if they have one or more seizures that were not caused by some known and reversible medical condition like alcohol withdrawal or extremely low blood sugar. The seizures in epilepsy may be related to a brain injury or a family tendency, but often the cause is completely unknown. The word "epilepsy" does not indicate anything about the cause of the person's seizures or their severity. Nevertheless, epilepsy does not cause and is not a form of mental illness. And in general it does not affect your ability to think and learn. Most people with epilepsy have normal intelligence. Children with epilepsy may have a hard time performing in school, but this is usually not the result of below-normal intelligence. Frequent absence seizures, for instance, may explain why a child seems to "zone out" or not pay attention during class. One-third of children with autism spectrum disorder may have seizures.

Anything that disrupts the brain’s natural circuitry can bring on Epilepsy:, including Illness, Genes, Brain/Severe head injury, Abnormal brain development or A change in the structure of your brain, Stroke, Lack of oxygen, Fever (febrile seizures), Infections, Alzheimer's disease and Most people with epilepsy never find a specific cause (unknown) and this is called Idiopathic, Many without a clear cause of epilepsy may have a genetic form. Long-lasting or recurring seizures may be a condition called status epilepticus.

Febrile Seizures
Febrile seizures are the most common type of convulsions in infants and young children (about 6 months and 5 years old).
The vast majority of febrile seizures are convulsions. Most often during a febrile seizure, a child will lose consciousness and both arms and legs will shake uncontrollably. common symptoms include eye rolling, rigid (stiff) limbs, or twitching on only one side or a portion of the body, such as an arm or a leg, severe shaking or tightening of the muscles.  Sometimes during a febrile seizure, a child may lose consciousness but will not noticeably shake or move.
Having a febrile seizure does not mean a child has epilepsy, since that disorder is characterized by reoccurring seizures that are not triggered by fever.  Even prolonged seizures (lasting more 15 minutes) generally have a good outcome but carry an increased risk of developing epilepsy.

Febrile seizures also aren't an indication of epilepsy, a tendency to have recurrent seizures caused by abnormal electrical signals in the brain. The odds that your child will develop epilepsy after a febrile seizure are small. Only a small percentage of children who have a febrile seizure go on to develop epilepsy

The small group of children with very prolonged febrile seizures lasting longer than 30 minutes.  In these children, the risk of epilepsy is as high as 30 to 40 percent though the condition may not occur for many years, prolonged febrile seizures can injure the hippocampus, a brain structure involved with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE)

Early febrile seizures prolonged and ineffective treatment are a precipitating event that leads to Hippocampal sclerosis. Hippocampal sclerosis develops in life during the course of recurrent complex partial seizures. If not treated, the memory will gradually worsening, because the hippocampus stores new memory, then passes it on to appropriate parts of the brain for permanent storage.  When it's not functioning properly, some new memory cannot be retained.  Which explain why many people with TLE identify memory as a problem.

Numerous prescription medications are used to prevent seizures. Anticonvulsant medications can prevent febrile seizures when taken daily. Oral or rectal diazepam (Valium, Diastat) also can reduce the risk of febrile seizures if taken at the time of a fever. But these medications all have drawbacks. They carry a definite risk of serious side effects in young children which is why herbal medicine  should be the best treatment which have no single side effect and it is a one-time cure to Febrile Seizure if used appropriately.

Symptoms of Epilepsy and SeizuresEpilepsy Symptoms

Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures
These used to be called grand mal seizures, and they’re the most easily spotted. This is the most severe and debilitating category of seizure that can be experienced by an epilepsy patient. All areas of the brain (the cortex) are involved in a generalized seizure. The person experiencing such a seizure may cry out or make some sound, stiffen arms and legs, then begin to jerk. This can last for several seconds to a minute (up to 3 minutes) and then have rhythmic movements of the arms and legs. Often the rhythmic movements slow before stopping.
Eyes are generally open.
The person may appear to not be breathing and actually turn blue. This may be followed by a period of deep, noisy breathes.
The return to consciousness is gradual and the person may be tired and confused for quite some time -- minutes to hours.
Loss of urine is common.

Partial or Focal seizures
These only affect one side of your brain, so only part of the body is affected. Depending on the part of the brain having abnormal electrical activity, symptoms may vary. When the seizures occur due to involvement of one area of brain, they are known as Focal Seizures.
These are of two types: Simple Partial and Complex Partial. In Simple Partial cases, the person remains conscious, has a sudden emotional experience (feeling of joy, sadness, fear, sexual arousal), has hallucinations of hearing, taste, smell or vision, and there may also be an involuntary jerking of body parts. In Complex Partial Seizure, the person’s consciousness is altered or lost. The symptoms include staring, automatism (repeated rhythmic, purposeless movements) like eye blinking, hand rubbing, walking in circle, mouth movements, smacking movement of lips, picking at bed clothes. After a few minutes, consciousness is regained and the drowsy feeling may remain.

Absence or Petit Mal Seizures
These are often described as staring spells. The person stops what he’s doing, stares into space for a few seconds, then goes on like nothing happened. Repetitive blinking or other small movements may be present. It’s most common in children and usually starts between the ages of 4 and 12. Some kids have as many as 100 to 200 absence seizures in 1 day. Typically, these seizures are brief, lasting only seconds.

Does Anti-Epileptic drugs (AEDs) effectively control seizure disorder?
For over 80 years, the most used treatment for epilepsy and seizure disorders has been through the use of seizure-preventing medications called anti-convulsion or anti-epileptic drugs. Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) aimed at modifying the structures and processes involved during the development of a seizure; including neurons, receptors, glia, ion channels and inhibitory or excitatory synapses. Inhibition is triggered to stop or prevent seizure activity. Examples may include: Aptiom, Ativan, Carbatrol, Depakene, Dilantin, Felbatol, Keppra, Klonopin, Lamictal, Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Topamax, Vimpat and more.

While these medications do not cure epilepsy, they make it possible for many people to live normal, active lives completely free of seizures. Other people may continue to have seizures, but less frequently. And there are still those who need other treatment methods as the drugs are not effective against their seizures. For people with drug-resistant epilepsy, several studies have shown that adverse effects are the primary determinants of low quality of life and have a more important impact on quality of life than the frequency of seizures. Understanding the manifestations of drug toxicity, risk factors involved and effective prevention measures is therefore essential. How well a drug works depends on it getting to the part of the body it needs to work on (called the site of action).  In this instances, prescription and over-the-counter drugs may worsening seizure disorder and some experience may seizure control at the cost of debilitating side effects. The problem with such drugs is that they are often relatively ineffective and carry a plethora of negative side effects. In fact, it is these two factors that have driven many desperate patients to seek out medical cannabis as a solution where conventional pharmaceutical therapies have failed or provided too much suffering. Among effects on the central nervous system, the possibility of paradoxical worsening of seizures has been reported. This phenomenon may be caused by use of excessive doses, or by prescription of an antiepileptic drug inappropriate for the specific type of epilepsy. For example, carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine can worsen seizures and even precipitate status epilepticus when given to patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. It is no surprise that the majority of their adverse effects affect the central nervous system. Those most frequently observed include sedation, fatigue, dizziness, coordination disturbances (ataxia, dysarthria, diplopia), tremor, cognitive deficits, mood alterations, behavioural changes and sexual disorders (loss of libido, erectile dysfunction). Some adverse effects of antiepileptic drugs develop insidiously and may become apparent only after months or even years of therapy.
The risk for congenital malformations in newborns of mothers treated with antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy is about 2-6%, versus 1-2% for the general population. The risk varies in relation to the type of drug, the dose and the number of administered drugs

Other Treatments

Acupuncture
Acupuncture can be quite useful for epilepsy, depending upon the type and extent of a person's epilepsy. A growing number of people with epilepsy are finding that this ancient treatment helps control seizures. The goal of acupuncture is to restore harmony within the body acupuncture carries low, but possible, risks." Acupun treatment helped reduce the frequency and severity of their seizures. Acupuncture targets the cause of an illness. And this method of preventing and treating illness has a very different basis than Western medicine used now adays, although it may take some time for the effects to be felt and more importantly it cannot possibly cure Epilepsy, sometimes can cause Bleeding, Infection, Pain due to blunt, hooked or forgotten needle. The most frequent problem: the piercing of a patient's lung or surrounding tissue. Acupuncture typically involves regularly scheduled follow-up treatments, which may prove a hassle for some patients. Treatments can be costly and often aren’t covered by health insurance providers, and results aren’t guaranteed, possibly leading some patients to believe they’ve wasted their time and money.

Marijuana Cannabidiol (CBD)
It is just one of more than the 60 components or active ingredients that belong to a class of molecules called phytocannabinoids that are found in cannabis. It has been hailed as a wonder drug by some parents whose children suffer severe forms of epilepsy. Anecdotal evidence of the power of cannabis to treat seizure disorders and epilepsy have been available for literally thousands of years. Ingredients in marijuana and the cannabinoid receptor protein produced naturally in the body to regulate the central nervous system and other bodily functions play a critical role in controlling spontaneous seizures in epilepsy, It also have healing and neuroprotective properties. Our CBD is completely non-psychoactive. It is safe and non-toxic. Can never over-dose in anyway. CBD is a very important part of the mix, but only part. We saw minor seizure control and developmental progress with CBD alone, we added measurable levels of THC to the mix. It is also effective in reducing inflammation (anti-inflammatory), anxiety (anxiolytic),  nausea (anti-emetic). Counters some of the negative effects of THC(ie. paranoia, intoxication, quick heartbeat (tachycardia) short term memory loss, lethargy/sedation, etc.). It is an immunomodulator and helps the immune system function more efficiently. Is a powerful pain reliever (analgesic). It is effective in both peripheral neuropathic pain and central pain. Has been found to relieve convulsions and other movement disorders. Is an anti-spasmodic and antiepileptic. It is also neuroprotectant and a powerful antioxidant. It has applications in treatment for Alzheimer’s, Parkinsons, cerebral ischemia, and brain and nerve damage from stroke. It can inhibit cancer cell growth (anticarcinogenic). Our CBD are completely free of any harmful side effect whatsoever.
